This is Tonic's third album and up until know I haven't felt inclined to feature them.
This time however, I am pleased to include a review for their very good new album.
The band seem to fill a void between the very commercial Matchbox Twenty and the heavier more alternative Creed.
This is the guy's best album to date and is more melodic than ever before. They have retained the tuned down dirty guitar sound that so many modern rock band have, but on Head on Straight, there is greater variation in that guitar sound and the song themselves seem more eager to provide hooks for the listener.
I have no doubt that the punchy rock sound of the album and the increased commerciality of it can be credited to the great production of Bob Rock.
Like so many bands before, Bob has helped these guys find a real groove and this set of song sis more cohesive and tighter than before.
The band's breakthrough hit You Wanted More is not duplicated here, yet there is three of four potential hit songs, Take Me As I Am, Count On Me, Liar or the sultry ballad On Your Feet Again would all be at home at modern rock radio.
There's nothing overly heavy on the album. Once you pass the cool opening rocker Roses, it's pretty easy going.
In fact, maybe it could have been heavier?

The Bottom Line
Head On Straight is a good punchy, but commercial modern rock record with lots of melody and plenty of strong hooks to offer fans of nu-breed and the like.
I wouldn't say that this would convert classic melodic rock fans, like the Harem Scarem album could, but for those attuned to the genre, it's an impressive album that doesn't stick to the formula of so many faceless others.
