Robin Brock is a sharp singer indeed. Her tone and delivery of the material is superb. She grasps hold of the material on offer here and sings with sure conviction.
The songs are first rate and the production from Keith Olsen is naturally fabulous.
Robin burst onto the scene a couple years back with a strong debut and enough attention to gain the support of a stellar line up of musicians for this release. Featured on Hidden Power are Tim Pierce, Jeff Pilson and James Kottack amongst other guests.
The only thing I would say about this release is that it is softer and more laid back than I anticipated.
With the above names featured, you would have expected a more rocking affair - especially after her sensational debut.
The first album rocked a little more and with this line up, I anticipated a barnstorming melodic rock release.
Not so, but having said that, this is still the better album of the two. the song quality is stronger, it has longer lasting power and the production is sharp and crisp.
Next album, just add a little more gusto!
The album opens with a sultry moody rock track I'm Doing Fine, then moves into a cracking pop anthem in the best tradition of Patty Smyth and Fiona with These Walls.
Read My Mind is again soft and sultry, using the sex appeal of her voice to add to the song's charms.
The Game is a more up-tempo pop rocker with a cool guitar lead and some sharp production.
I Surrender and In This Skin are examples of a couple of tracks that sound great, but replicate what has already been included earlier in the album.
After The Storm is another snappy pop rocker with a strong likeness to Patty Smyth and comes at a time int he album where the tempo needed a little boost.
BOTTOM LINE: The nature of the songs and style of this album requires that you have to give your undivided attention to this and several repeated listens. The songs, while soft in nature, are high quality and given the chance are fine examples of female fronted melodic pop rock.
Any fans of Patty Smyth, Fiona, Dante Fox or Haven should give this talented singer/songwriter a chance. Chances are you will like what you hear. But I will still look forward to even better come album number 3.
