I'm not a huge John Wetton fan, but nor am I unreceptive to his charms. Battle Lines was a solid album and I have always been a fan of early (classic) Asia. This is John's first solo album in some time and having heard it, should be the last for a while too.
This is just plain dull. I'm bound to be honored with some hate mail from die hard Wetton supporters and that's fine. But all other folk should avoid this at all costs.
The average melodic rock fan isn't going to gain anything from this overly slow and pedestrian paced outing.
Of 13 tracks, nothing gets past mid tempo at best - most of it is slow, dramatic, symphonic rock. Which may not be a bad thing in itself, but take out any sign of a catchy chorus, memorable hook or a vocal that stretches any ability of the very talented Wetton and the album seems to run 3 hours.
The moody title track and the mid-album placed Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way offers some melodic joy, but to find them surrounded by another dozen tracks of similar pace eliminates much of that joy.

The Bottom Line
|
Unless you need some slightly more dramatic-than-average dinner music to accompany your evening, steel clear of this album. As far as a good melodic rock album goes, this is anything but. Listening to this while driving may cause one to fall asleep at the wheel, so please avoid that circumstance. Stick to Asia instead.
