Depswa are a band on the rise and Geffen have released this 3 track EP to the press to start building hype. These guys are a fine modern rock outfit, with a very commercial sound, which should find them on FM radio in quick time.
Opening track This Time has all the elements of a radio hit, while Not Responsible relies on vocal filters and a far heavier guitar tone, with a likeable chorus hook. The last track Needles is another strong album track.
These guys will find a lot of fans when the time comes - those into modern rock, modern production techniques and the hint of industrial heaviness should watch out for them.

Crush are another Matchbox Twenty style nu-breed / rock outfit. They play pleasant, non-harmful, easy going radio rock, with a slightly more stripped back/acoustic driven approach to that of MB20.
There's a few good tracks here - when they crank it a little and close in on a SR-71 sound, they are much more appealing than the otherwise blander slower numbers.
Not an essential purchase, especially given that there are far better nu-breed purchases about, but not bad either.

Irwin is the real name of former Southern Sons frontman Jack Jones. This is his long awaited solo debut. And it's very good...but...you seriously have to be into modern rock / alternative pop to appreciate it.
It has some fine nu-breed style melodic moments, but other more experimental pop elements that I really don't appreciate. There's no denying that Jack's a first class song-writer, you just have to be attuned to his way of thinking to grasp his musical concept. If you have previously appreciated singer/songwriter style modern rock, do check this out, as it is musically interesting. Just not for fans of straight ahead AOR or melodic rock. And no, it's nothing remotely like Southern Sons!

Anyone who enjoyed Tiffany's come back release from last year, which saw her go all contemporary / adult pop should jump on this release immediately.
Xoch has an unusual name and a contemporary look, but she sings a very melodic brand of pop rock that should see her name continue to be featured in many conversations.
The songs on The One range from uptempo Cheap Trick style rockers, to a less aggressive, but similarly styled Avril Lavigne type tracks, to simple feel good pop, in the vein of the previously mentioned Tiffany.

3DD have been around a few years now. This is their second album following their debut, which contained the breakout hit Kryptonite. Another modern rock release, this one is a little closer to the mainstream middle ground occupied by Nickleback, Train and the like. There doesn't appear to be anything as instant as Kryptonite on here, but the consistency of the record is undoubtable. Produced by Rick Parasher and mixed by Randy Staub, the sound is immaculate.
I'm not a huge fan of straight up modern rock - a little bland for me. Nu-breed and modern pop are far kinder to my ears.
A strong and consistent record that fans of the debut should embrace.

Ra are (yet) another new modern rock outfit. Thankfully they are another bands that feature a decent singer, which is great news for those that don't mind modern rock, but hate the nasal ass singing from the likes of Creed.
Not as melodic as the likes as Depswa or 3 Doors Down, this album features a tough guitar sound, tight production and plenty of angst ridden lyrics. The consistent sound and song quality means modern rock fans should enjoy this release, but it's not going to cross over to melodic fans as easily.

Monroe's back with his first solo album in a while and the first since the tragic death of his wife. It's great to hear him at his powerful best, his vocals ruling this record from the opening bars. For long time fans of Michael, there's a little of everything here. The record contains some of the melodic hard rock of his best ever record Not Faking It, some sleaze from the Hanoi days and most of all, plenty of punk attitude from his other projects like Demolition 23. Nothing else quite as catchy here as the opening track Do Anything You Wanna Do, but still plenty of high-octane, energy charge hard rock-n-punk.
A welcome come back, but hopefully the next album will be all original, rather than just 3 or 4 new tracks like this album.

If one album featuring Mike wasn't cool enough, here's two - the long time coming new Hanoi Rocks album. And how to the guys sound after all these years? Like they never split. It's obviously not the very original line-up, but the guys come close to the energy and legacy of this famous Scandinavian hard rock outfit.
And boy does this rock. It's pretty menacing in places, with tracks like Whatcha Want really going for the jugular. There's lots of attitude filled sleaze/glam/heavy rock with a few mellow more introspective tracks, which in typical Hanoi fashion, push the envelope a little.
Add in plenty of those Monroe satirical and attitude filled lyrics and a new chapter has been started. A very enjoyable listen that most Hanoi fans should be satisfied with.

This is UK hard rockers Dirty Deeds under their new name. Produced by Iron Maiden's Steve Harris, the album is essentially a NWOBHM influenced riff fest, in the vein of Saxon and Maiden and the great bands that came before them.
The strong, gruff vocal and the hard guitar-riff attitude combined with the tight production mean that this album sounds heavy, yet remains melodic and will appeal to all fans of traditional British hard rock.
It's nothing highly original, but in the absence of many other albums like this, it will come as a breath of fresh air to fans of this genre.

Martin Stenmarck is another new artist capable of writing and recording catchy pop/rock songs. As if there isn't enough of them already, Martin joins the swag of other classy Swedish melodic rock artists with his independently released debut.
Fans of a solo Joey Tempest or the more pop/rock/nu-breed artists like BBMak, Taxiride, Invertigo and the recently featured Mikael Erlandsson will love this. It's pure pop joy, with uplifting harmony and melody filled tracks, delivered in a semi-acoustic style - filling the album from start to finish. A very highly recommended buy if you like it soft and fluffy and have a taste for some of the great pop releases available right now.

There's never going to be any surprise in wondering what a Jackyl record will comprise of. The guys have made a good career out of high energy AC/DC style, American hard rock and despite them now being an independent artist, this is more of the same. The only thing that changes is the quality of the songs and the production style.
Well, Relentless features the same old songs - nothing too serious and lots of screaming vocals! That's ok, but it's not for everyone. If you are into that, this will please. The production is the other thing - that's a little up and down here - some tracks compare favorable to the band's past material, while others sound like they were recorded on a shoestring budget. An ok release, but nothing that will resurrect rock n roll.

Thankfully this Chavis release is available at a budget price, as it's only 7 tracks. Sometimes X are a hard rock outfit playing a fairly recognizable brand of modern, but melodic American rock. The production is ok and the harmony vocals are nice, but the lead vocalist lacks any real punch and the music is rather bland. There are no big guitar riffs and no killer hooks in any of the 7 tracks. It just sounds a little safe and a little too far from anything original or memorable to be of much interest to site regulars.

Animal features Rich Lewis on lead vocals, who has to be a relation of LA Guns' Phil Lewis, as the vocal style is very similar. The sound at times, is also a little like LA Guns - the more intense, heavy and in your face Guns that is.
Animal's album is all in your face modern hard rock, with a big fat chunky guitar sound and some heavy, raspy lead vocals. The unfortunate thing here is a very average production quality, masking some good heavy songs in a muddy and distorted sound. It does take away from listening pleasure, but if you like some heavy metal/sleaze in your life, check it out.

ROT features guitarist Joe Stump and vocalist Michael Vescera. One can guess the style - flat out melodic heavy metal, with a frantic beat and furious guitar riffing throughout. It's the band's 4th album - second under the sole Reign of Terror banner.
In the true tradition of European melodic power metal, these guys know what they are doing and it shows in the performance. This is one of the better examples of this genre, out of the many titles available right now.
Featured is lots of shredding and best of all, the great vocals of Vescera. Keyboard wiz Mats Olausson guests.

Mad Margritt are basically a no frills, stripped back, honest American rock n roll band, with a guitar driven sound that takes one back to the mid-late 80's. The guys have included 2 interesting and enjoyable covers, one short instrumental and 6 other originals on this release. The guys are mid-tempo rock - not too heavy, not too light and write a catchy tune or two. The only things against them are the 34 minute running time and the lack of a bigger budget to improve production quality. Importantly though, song quality is definitely present.

Rusty's album is a good example of American shred-metal. This instrumental album is in the fine vein of Yngwie, Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert and the like.
Lots of fast rhythms, shredding solos over heavy riff foundations, all at varying paces throughout the album's tracks.
An album for serious fans of guitar instrumentals and shred fests. But of all the albums available in this genre, Rusty's lines up with some of the better I have heard. Lots of melody and well timed chord changes, but not too much over the top wankiness, complimented by a decent production sound.

Joop is another hard rock instrumentalist, but not quite as frantic or shred orientated as Rusty Cooley or his peers such as Yngwie. This is a more technical instrumental album, with a slower pace, more varied style and mood and some softer ballad-esque instrumentals. Again, it is one for guitar fans and players alike, this one better for those that like it a little more laid back and reflective. Another good example of it's genre and another solid production job.

EMN have been quite prolific since joining Perris Records. This new release is a live album recorded from all eras of the band's touring history, pieced together for this release. Taking songs from 3 different albums and adding a couple of covers, the release is primarily a fan only affair. This is very raw, pretty rough around the edges and thoroughly unpolished. But if you like the band and love the atmosphere of truly live albums - this will impress. It could do with a slightly better sound, but that said, I'd take this over a studio enhanced live album any day.

Jetboy are back - well, sort of! This CD is a compilation of demo's, unreleased, acoustic and alternate versions of the band's songs. Given that the songs are from different sources, the quality is quite varied. It's a little rough in places, but as this is another release aimed at die-hard fans, I can see most of those it applies to getting into it. Jetboy were always a good band that never quite broke through. This compilation highlights some great songwriting that should have taken them further, if luck had of been on their side.

German hard rockers Wild Frontier are back with album number 2. Their first was well received and #2 should be no different. The opening track is a real winner. Wild Wind Blows has a killer hook and launches the album in fine style.
And so it continues...the album is filled with good European rock songs - all better than the debut and all with solid hooks and melodies. The guys aren't overly heavy - this is straight up European melodic rock. Throw in a couple of classy ballads and a very good album is complete. Another hard rocking Swedish outfit here - although a little different than your typical straight up sound. These guys feature a slightly more modern-friendly sound, featuring the slightly unusual high-pitch vocals of singer Thomas Thulin.
His vocals are almost American glam/sleaze friendly, while the music is more modern Scandi hard rock. It's an unusual mix that will require a taste for the diverse. Not the catchiest thing I have heard and not ones for "safer" melodic music.

Edenbridge are another Massacre act and therefore are another European melodic metal act. But one difference here - female lead vocals. It has a slightly gothic sound, mixed with the traditional elements of double kick drum, shred fest soloing and an Iron Maiden style approach. I am not a fan of the vocals, as it isn't Doro style singing here - it's a higher octave and more dramatic/progressive feel. But with that said, it's somewhat original and definitely one of it's kind in the marketplace. That should help it find some listeners.

There's no way I can do a review of a 2CD / 2.5 hour long Prog-rock release in this little space. In fact, it's not my forte as a reviewer, but I'm sure regulars know that. What I can say is that the Flower Kings have been at the forefront of progressive music in Europe and especially in their native Sweden.
This album is their boldest and biggest release to date, with songs ranging from 3 minutes to 8 minutes, with three other tracks clocking in at 14, 24 and 30 minutes each respectfully. So there's a lot of listening to do here. If Toto were a semi-instrumental European prog rock band, Flower Kings might come close to what you would get. Very interesting for the musically adventurous!

This is the band name for White Sister's Gary Brandon's new project. This is a two track promotional only release that Gary is using to get the band name out there. Suddenly is the lead track - a very atmospheric number in the vein of Yes and Pink Floyd. A demo for the second song Do Or Die is next - this track again soft in nature, but more Westcoast in style. An interesting change in pace and direction for Gary and not something that all melodic fans are going to take to. The Australian metal scene is influenced by both the US and Europe, so it's normally the case that bands have their own blend of originality mixed with a little something from these outside influences. Interesting release. This is a big arena hard rock album with some crunchy guitars and attitude driven approach. But the sound is well below par for what is expected these days. Sounding hollow and suffering a budget production, the otherwise good songs are somewhat devalued. I like the sound of the vocals, but quite often here he just doesn't cut it - at times grinding on the ears rather than pleasuring them.
Good attitude, good songs, some strong melodies, but not combining for a worth release after it has all been packaged together.

July For Kings are a band you will be hearing a lot more of for 2 reasons. 1 - they write very good commercial friendly modern rock songs and 2 - they sound dead on for Matchbox Twenty.
The two factors will see them on FM radio for some time I think. The band's sound is a little heavier and more aggressive then the safer MB20. Take MB20's sound and mix it with the most recent SR-71 and add a touch of the Creed style guitar sound and JFK is what you get. Some won't like them as they are too much like MB20 and as much as I think this is an impressive debut, MB20 still have catchier songs. Heavier, better written and perfectly produced, the album blast thru the speakers like a 20 pound sledge hammer. Fast, furious and heavy as hell. Just what fans of the band would want.

Krokus are another classic hard rock band that have returned with their original line up after a long hiatus. And believe it or not, this is another cracking good album! The band have basically looked back over their back catalogue, took out the best elements, written new tunes to match those and recorded this album.
The band sound tight, the production is excellent, the songs rock and the production is of the highest order.
Catchy melodic friendly songs with big guitar riffs follow, with the band also nailing a couple of great slow-mid tempo ballads. Add a couple of moody circuit breakers and this 14 track album retains a good balance.
Their love of AC/DC hasn't diminished either, so with their album delayed from release; why not take this up instead? Almost so good I am forgetting the last album released under the Krokus name!

This should have been reviewed earlier and in more detail, but alas, I missed the boat so to speak.
Fortunately, the music didn't and it's never too late to purchase a good CD. This CD is a rock opera, with a base band and guest cast. Guests include Andy Kuntz (Vanden Plas), DC Cooper (Silent Force) and Sabine Edelsbacher (Edenbridge), on top of the base band of Drums: Andreas Lill (VANDEN PLAS), Bass: Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69), Guitars: Stephan Lill (VANDEN PLAS), Alfred Koffler (PINK CREAM 69), Alex Beyrodt (SILENT FORCE), Keyboards: Günter Werno (VANDEN PLAS) and Percussion: Pedro Weiss (Session Percussionist)
As the pedigree of the line up might suggest this is a first class album and should be an essential purchase for fans of the genre. And what genre are we talking of? European hard rock / progressive metal - with extra credit for fans of rock operas and concept albums.
This is immaculately produced and the mix of male and female leads, plus the diversity of the tracks makes this a very interesting listen and one of the best examples of this style of hard rock.

Saigon Kick vocalist Matt Kramer is back with a solo album released of his own accord. War & Peas isn't musically matched with his former band, but retains the familiar semi-alternative air that band always had about them.
If Matt was capable of recording a straight up hard rock album - this would be it. That said, this still relies on an alternative/modern heavy rock slant, but the nature of the songs allows more instant likeability in them and with repeat listens, hooks and melodies become better known.
As fans will attest to, Matt's got a unique voice, so new listeners should take that into mind. Established fans will eat this up. A solid and rocking album.

Mark Williams is back with a new Lionel's Dad album. Brother Joseph writes the song Man In Me, and other than a few space guests musicians, the rest of the album is all Mark. The lead track Break The Normal sums up the album. It's not really melodic rock, yet it's very melodic. It's too straight-up to be alternative and not progressive enough to be a prog rock album.
At times the album has a pop/progressive, other times Mark sounds close to brother Joe on some more AOR friendly numbers. Then it turns Westcoast....smooth as. Yes, it's quite a varied album, but the album's strength's are its song quality and an even production sound - despite the varied styles featured within.

This is a 2CD Best Of compilation from the cult German metal band. 100 minutes and 22 tracks of in your face Euro-metal band, featuring female vocalist Jutta - who has one big voice!
Live, album and unreleased tracks are included, so it's a pretty comprehensive collection for fans of the band or those that would like to take a look back at a past era. Tracks covered were originally released/recorded from 1985 to 1990.
For fans of Euro/German metal that love Doro and Warlock.

No, not really into this. I can see merit in just about everything if it's good, but can't get into this. This is ultra heavy metal with those grinding gruff and barely audible vocals. And the production/guitar sound is muddy as hell, so I'll pass on recommending this to any melodic heads. Might be appreciated by some, but if you want something heavy and powerful, go for Masterplan instead.

This is a 5 track EP recorded some years back and now gaining distribution. All I can say is that if it couldn't get a foothold into the scene in 1996, it's not going to now. It's a demo quality hard rock recording, with nothing other than the typical American sound employed to try and impress. Not bad songs (once you pass over the opening Jim Croce cover), but weak production and no real zest makes this release not so appealing.

This is a re-mastered re-release of the cult self-tiled album from Ivory Tower. This archive release has dated quite badly. Not so much the songs, they still rock, but the production is a little below average.
Fans of the original release looking for a CD will no doubt be far more enthusiastic. With so many other great releases out now that are brand new, I would guess that this will be a fan only purchase.
The guys are working on a new album, which by the sound of things would have some great potential. I'll look forward to that instead. One thing is certain; the guys write a good rock song.

File under essential for fans of pure pop/AOR magic! Although in danger of being branded a boy-band these guys are pure AOR at it's pinkest and fluffiest.
Semi-acoustic and driven by sweet melodies and multi-layered harmonies, these guys write catchy as hell pop rock songs and have the best pop hooks this side of Nelson's Life album. In fact, if you bought that - you need this. From the UK, the band's accent shines through with some of Old Blighty's musical history flowing thru to these guys.
Like a few albums reviewed in this set of CDs, get it if you own anything remotely like this. Fans of Martin Stenmarck, Nelson, Mikael Erlandsson need this quick. A healthy dose of electric guitar is included.

Seven and The Sun are another pop rock/nu-breed style band that specialize in simple pop songs. Not as catchy or as AOR in style as BBMak, these guys are more modern pop/rock in a semi-acoustic style. Catchy yes, but not as layered or as harmony rich as some of the other pop releases featured here.
As stated, it's more acoustic driven in the Matchbox Twenty style of straight up rock. Good stuff for its style, but not quite as catchy as some other cross-over artists that AOR fans should rate essential.

A pretty straight forward review for a pretty self explanatory release. Fans of recent era JP should mark this essential, as 20 plus tracks from the old and the new will seem very appealing.
But fans of Halford and the golden era of this classic metal band might cringe a little at new live versions of the classics. A tidy package for fans, but not as essential as the 2CD live set bound to be released when (if!) Halford does return.

Another release from the interesting Regain Records label. Fairly standard heavy metal here - gruff, in your face vocals, double kick drums pounding relentlessly and some ear bleeding guitar riffs. Nothing bad, as the album is produced well and mixed evenly. But not a whole heap of originality to ensure it's noticed in the sea of several other releases.

Another heavy metal release from Regain. TR are a progressive metal outfit, in the Seventh Avenue/Reign Of Fire style.
Most of the album's 9 tracks clock in above 6 minutes, with a few reaching 8+. Strong vocals, lots of swirling keyboards and some Yngwie style shredding are the highlights of this well rounded and competent release, that should find some fans in the Euro-metal scene.

Steve Howe is of course known for his part in symph-rockers Yes, but is a renowned solo and instrumental guitarist. This is his new instrumental album, which sees him cover a few different bases.
To sum up, it's mainly an acoustic driven release, using a few different styles and effects to create a new age mood and a relaxing atmosphere. Some fantastic guitar playing - which really goes without saying. Steve also uses effects to create new sounds and add to the musical layers.
Excellent for what it is - those into this will know what I mean and will score another great late night listening album. Those looking to rock or hear vocals - this isn't for you.

Nu-breeder's Sister Hazel have split with their label and gone out on their own, recording a better album than their debut. Ironic isn't it? These guys play melodic friendly modern rock that bands like The Calling and MB20 are making a healthy living off. Their songs are reasonably catchy, but not to the point where AOR fans are going to fall over themselves to grab this.
Those into modern rock and 2003 radio friendly guitar driven stuff will get more out of it than anyone. The band's slightly acoustic and often southern sounding twang adds a little more musical interest.

Another Sweden Rock Records release, this bluesy / 70's retro rock styled outfit will appeal to those that like a dose of garage blues in their collection. A little Zep/Hendrix/Thorogood and a little of their own style.
A muddy production could be intentional, as it's adds to the atmosphere. But not the clearest sound I have ever heard.
No big choruses or hooks here, so you'll have to be right into the style to take anything away from this. Strong vocals the highlight.

This CD is maybe a year old - shame on me for not getting to it earlier. GF are a European AOR act that play it light and fluffy with a style closer to melodic rock than pure AOR. Yet this is very ballad-esque, with some strong hooks a highlight. Good choruses help the songs be memorable, but an average production and the sometimes strong vocal accent the distractions.
Small points, as the most important ingredient - the songs - are of above average quality.

German hard rockers Affair are back with a new hard rocking album with strong melodic elements that mirror such other European acts Shylock, Wicked Sensation, Jaded Heart and early Gotthard.
The music offers good strong melodic hooks with a powerful lead vocal and some fine lead guitar to top things off.
This is another review that slipped between the cracks, but the album is still worthy of attention from fans of European/German melodic hard rock.

I never rated the band's debut that highly on my personal favorites list, but might have to re-think after hearing this album. Criminal that such fine melodic rock songs could go ignored by mainstream press and radio, when other equally commercial and far less deserving acts get all the breaks.
This is a great collection of diverse radio friendly pop/rock songs, ranging from the pure melodic bliss of the opening track Wonderland, through to the semi-acoustic, southern twang of Someone To Believe In. It's mainly laid back, semi-acoustic in style, but some of the more uptempo numbers rock out a little. The quality throughout though remains high. Looking for something melodic, but with a Midwestern twist? Check this out.

This album has been out a while now, sorry Don. But as I always say, it's never too late...Don's album is an independent release of all American style melodic rock in the tradition of Danny Danzi or the recently featured Robert Valdes. We're talking straight up hard rock, lots of guitar solos and some strong vocals. The production varies throughout the album, from demo quality to indie release quality. And that's fine, as the songs are the album's strengths and everyone could always use a bigger budget. Fans of indie American rock should check Don's site out for samples.

This is another long over due review, but country rock fans take note - this is an excellent album. This is idea for those that loved Nelson's country release, or Mitch Malloy's foray into the genre. Even if you and of of those folk that like it acoustic and stripped back and don't mind the site of a cowboy hat on their CD covers, you should check Chris out.
This is very commercial southern semi-acoustic pop country and could easily find itself on airwaves, which is why you might hear more from Chris as time goes by. Strict AOR fans won't accept it, but those with a hankering for a hoedown will. Well played, produced and sung. He even looks like the old Mitch Malloy!

Yet another long lost review, but ironically it is for an album I rate very highly and consider to be one of the better examples of its genre. If you like Dream Theater or any heavy melodic metal act with a slightly progressive edge, these guys have to be added to your collection.
Immaculately produced, brilliantly sung by Lance King and containing some fine melodic heavy rock songs, this album has all the elements of an essential release. And what I really like is the heavy and powerful edge to the songs, all surrounded by melodic hooks and interesting vocals. All in all, one of the better progressive hard rock CDs since Dream Theater's Images And Words.
