Hirsh Gardner is better know for his role as drummer and backing vocalist for popular pomp rockers New England.
This is his first solo release after many years in the business and comes at a time where the possibility of New England reforming is more possible.
I hope they do, as I can't say that I really took to Hirsh as a solo artist.
Of course, pomp rock fans will have a greater appreciation for this album - even though I am a classic Magnum and Kansas fan.
It's not the style of the album, rather the delivery.
I found the vocal style on this album to be a little grating and certainly wouldn't recommend it to the average melodic rock fan.
The title track Wasteland For Broken Hearts starts the album promisingly, with layers of harmonies, lots of prominent keyboards pumping away and a pretty cool moody atmosphere set.
But the voice just doesn't work for me. It may be the way it's recorded, with the harmonies sounding fuller, but the lead sounding diluted.
Don't You Steal is also ok, as are a few other tracks, but as an album as a whole, the songs aren't memorable or strong enough to rate it highly.

The Bottom Line
|
There is nothing overly wrong with the album - it just isn't that strong. Especially stacked against the competition of a very healthy year. There are just too many other (better) options available.
Generally, all I can say is that there is something missing with this release that makes it a target for fans only, rather than the melodic rock buying community as a whole.
