The tribute album flood continues. Just about every rock band has been covered, some more than once. It's a pity no one has tackled any AOR acts. I floated plans for Night Ranger, Survivor and Rick Springfield tribute albums nearly 2 years ago now. Even had artists lined up for them, but couldn't get label backing. Probably just as well, as surely the world is tiring of these tributes. Maybe I should have talked to Deadline, but as is with this tribute, they seem intent on using the same musicians, talking the same role on in each album and generally turning in cheque book performances.
There have been some very good tributes (Van Halen, Aerosmith, Queen) and some bad ones (Kiss, Guns N Roses, AC/DC). This falls right in the middle. Just average.
The usual suspects are all here - Tracii Guns, Jerry Dixon, Eric Turner and Randy Castillo playing house band and vocalists Joe Leste, Jani Lane, Jizzy Pearl, Kelly Hansen, John Corabi, Phil Lewis, Stevie Rachelle and Steve Whiteman.
Tracks of merit - Wasted featuring John Corabi, Photograph featuring Jani Lane, Foolin' featuring Steve Whiteman, Rock Of Ages with Kelly Hansen, Bringin On The Heartbreak with Phil Lewis, Let It Rock featuring Jason McMaster and On Through The Night featuring Paul Shortino.
Disappointing tracks - Rock Brigade featuring Joe Leste, a shitful dance mix version of Rock Rock featuring Kevin DuBrow, Too Late For Love featuring an average vocal from Stevie Rachelle and You Got Me Running.
Once again, another tribute that chooses to ignore more than half the band's career.
BOTTOM LINE: The main thing is there appears to be no atmosphere on most of these tributes. This one has some good performances and solid production and musical backing. But apart from die hard fans of the people involved and a selection of die hard Leppard fans, this release has a limited scope.
